A collection of various beaches a little further off the main road to Rethymno, very close to Heraklion.

Agia Pelagia is a well-organized tourist resort with sandy, gravel and pebble beaches, that has been developed along the various gulfs of the peninsula offering all amenities and options for tourists. Mononaftis is a rather small but also well-organized pebble beach.

Driving out of Heraklion on the National Road to Rethymnon, you can reach sandy beaches in a very short time. Many locals take this 18km drive west of Heraklion to swim at the Peninsula of Agia Pelagia. This is a tourist resort with a variety of shops, cafeterias and restaurants that offers all one needs while enjoying the calm sea at the peninsula. There are also many accommodation facilities.
The Mononaftis beach is formed within a gulf that protects the beach from north winds. It is mostly visited by locals but lately there is large scale tourist development. To arrive here keep driving towards Rethymnon, at a very short distance you see another exit to Agia Pelagia, enter there and drive towards Mononafti beach. Just make sure you park your car high on the hill, as there are no parking places closer to the beach. A diving school is on site.
