Hania - Through Lefka Ori to the south east beaches

Published on: 2012-06-19 00:29:46
A drive through the mountains towards popular beaches in the south.

This rather long route combines ancient castles, the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and the beautiful south beaches at Hora Sfakion and Fragkokastelo.

Setting off from Hania in a short distance there are the remains at Aptera ancient town. The town was founded since Minoan Times and remained important till the Roman Era. Nearby there is a domed tomb in Stylos. The road to Sfakia is the only one connecting the village with the north and it passed through the Askyfou Plateau with the many small villages all around the Plateau. Sfakia is the capital of the Municipality and closeby there are numerous smaller beaches. Fragkokastelo with the remains of the Castle and the myth about itself is very attractive.
